UNP still wants to recognize existence of LTTE-controlled areas through a pact

The main opposition UNP yesterday vowed to work out a fresh peace initiative by signing a new accord with the LTTE for the cessation of hostilities, once it assumes office.

UNP frontliner Lakshman Kiriella told a news conference the party would work out a solution acceptable to all communities with the support of the international community including India, taking into consideration the present ground situation in the North-East.

"It was former President Chandrika Kumaratunga who signed an agreement with the Tigers for the cessation of hostilities in 1994. She recognized the existence of LTTE-controlled areas through that pact. The UNP government which came to power in 2001, also accepted that concept," he said.

Commenting on the 'Mahinda Chintana' policies, he said though President Mahinda Rajapaksa gave an assurance to work out a political solution within three months upon election to office, the government is now groping in the dark being unable to resolve the problem either through peaceful or military means.
